Life on Earth wouldn’t be that pretty easy without a water cycle as it helps purify water to a great extent.
Earth’s water is represented by various spheres, which show the volume in and above the Earth’s surface. The most massive sphere is approximately 332,500,000 cubic miles. The Earth’s liquid state freshwater found in swamps, rivers, lakes dams would be roughly covered 2,551,000 cubic miles (mi3).
Remember, freshwater sustains life on Earth, although much of this freshwater is either underground or unavailable for life sustenance. Besides, the freshwater that people, plants, and other living organisms depend on Earth is drawn from the above surface water sources. Such surface water-sources cover about 22,339 mi3.

Are you aware that over 96 % of Earth’s surface water is saline and mainly in the oceans, while less than 4% is freshwater? Some freshwater resources include falling water from the sky, such as snow frost and smog, moving streams, rivers, underground water, and lakes. This freshwater sustains life on the Earth’s surface.
Similarly, underground water is equally essential as it keeps streams flowing, which is part of the water cycle. Although we only see water on the surface of the Earth, the fact is that there is plenty of stagnant freshwater underground more than the liquid state on the Earth’s surface. For instance, a significant percentage of water you see flowing as rivers is due to the seepage of underground water into the river bet through aquiver rocks.
When it rains, the precipitation percolates into aquifers, and once fully recharged, these rocks ooze water that, in turn, restores rivers. Both the underground and surface water is within human reach and of importance. For instance, people dug wells and boreholes that contain underground water. In contrast, surface water, such as rivers and lakes, is used as drinking water in crop irrigations and animal farms, among other uses. Groundwater is equally essential as it supplies lakes and rivers full and provides water in places where surface water is scarce, such as in deserts through boreholes and wells.
Can we estimate how much of the Earth is water?
Below are some numbers that can help us estimate how much of the Earth is water? Do you know that if the Earth’s entire water (ice caps, oceans, glaciers, rivers, groundwater, and atmospheric water) were to contain in one large sphere, its diameter would be approximately 1,385 kilometers (860 miles) and roughly 332.5 mi3 (million cubic miles)? Remember, one cubic mile of water is equivalent to 1 trillion liters (264 billion gallons).
Approximately 12,900 km3 (3,100 mi3) of water is at any given time in the form of water vapor in the atmosphere. If it were to precipitate at once, the Earth’s surface would be covered with about one-inch water. About 280 mi3 of Earth’s water evaporates every day. Much of Earth’s freshwater is underground water, which is more than 2,000,000 mi3. However, most of this freshwater is stored as ice caps and glaciers mainly found in Greenland and the Polar Regions.
