At present, there are 51 countries on the European continent. It is a unique continent as it is not enclosed by water from all sides as on one side it is attached through the land border with Asia. Geographically, the north-western part of the land, enclosed by the Arctic Ocean in the north, the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Atlantic Ocean in the west, and the Black Sea in the South-west, is known as Eurasia.

Of these 51 independent countries, there are 5 countries that are known as transcontinental countries as they are located on two continents including Europe and Asia. These countries include Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Georgia. There are two other countries that are geographically located in western Asia but politically considered as part of Europe. These countries are Cyprus and Armenia.

It is not easy to define the border between the two continents, Europe and Asia, for the politicians and geographers. Normally the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Ural Mountains in Russia are considered as the borderline of Europe.

Russia is considered as the largest European country as it occupies almost 37% of the total area of the European continent. Vatican City is the smallest country in this continent as it exists in the center of Rome as a small independent territory.

Some of the most visited and the best places of tourist interest in Europe include France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

An economic and political union of some of the European countries is known as the European Union. Today 27 countries are enjoying the privileges and obligations of the membership of the European Union.

Though officially it was established on 1st November 1993 in Maastricht, Netherlands but since 1951 many European countries including France, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Italy, and the Netherlands used to cooperate economically. 

Several countries have joined after the establishment of the European Union. Croatia was the last country to join this Union in 2013.

The Maastricht Treaty came into force in 1993 has also established European Citizenship along with the European Union. The origin of the European Union was based on the EEC or European Economic Community and the ECSC or European Coal and Steel Community which were established in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome and in 1951 by the Treaty of Paris respectively. In this European Community, there were only six member countries including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, West Germany, and Luxembourg. With the addition of new members, this European Community and its successors have grown in power and size. The Treaty of Lisbon that came into force in 2009 was the latest major constitutional amendment made in the European Union.

The member countries of the European Union include Belgium, Austria, Cyprus, Croatia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Finland, Hungary, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Luxembourg, Poland, Netherlands, Romania, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Spain.

Every country that has participated in designing the initial treaties of the European Union is bound to obey the common laws of judicial and legislative institutions of the union.

How Many Countries In Europe Use The Euro?

Euro is the official currency of the European Union. But it is used by only 19 countries in Europe out of 27 members of the EU. These European countries include Belgium, Austria, Estonia, Cyprus, France, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Luxembourg, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Slovakia.

 

Though Euro is used by only 19 European countries, there are several other countries in which it is used as their legal tender. The notes and coins of the Euro can be used in all countries member of the European Union that has adopted it as their legal currency. But it is also used by several territories overseas like the Canaries, the Azores, French Guiana, Melilla and Ceuta, Madeira, Guadeloupe, Mayotte, Martinique, Saint Barthé lemy, Ré union, Miquelon, and Saint Pierre. Some other countries that use Euro with the permission of the European Union include Monaco, Andorra, Vatican City, and San Marino. Some other countries like Montenegro and Kosovo also use the Euro as their effective currency.
